i'm never gonna know you now
but i'm gonna love you anyhow

-elliott smith, waltz no. 2 (XO)

it's difficult to mourn the death of someone you don't personally know, but when his music has touched a part of you, then it's just a little easier. i still remember hearing waltz no.2 (to date still the best pop song ever written in waltz time) for the first time- it was my first experience into elliott's magical songwriting. i remember picking up his phenomenal either/ or album at the now defunct pacific plaza tower records after saving enough money to buy that import. his songs speak so tenderly of his sweet, lovely nature, but also reveal the pain and hurt that he tried so hard to bear with.

his music will always be close to my heart.
